How P&Gs Pert Plus Launched the 2-in-1 Shampoo Conditioner in 1980s

Carene Kunkler is a Cincinnati, Ohio, professional who has developed compelling brand strategies across a diversity of beauty and cosmetics products through the years. In the late 1980s, Carene Kunkler was part of a team that drove robust sales growth in the recently launched P&G brand Pert Plus.

Introduced in 1980 simply as Pert, the shampoo was reformulated in 1987 into a pioneering 2-in-1 product that combined shampoo and conditioner. This approach proved wildly successful, with a former “problem brand” benefitting from a $20 million advertising campaign introducing the product to a new generation of consumers. The brand successfully appealed to active men and women on the go who wanted clean and conditioned hair with a minimum of time wasted.

By 1989, Pert Plus had moved ahead of its P&G counterpart Head & Shoulders, which held a 9.5 Percent market share to take the top spot at 12 percent of the shampoo market. This rise to the top was attributed to a positive Consumer News article that lauded a new dandruff control version of Pert Plus that promised to expand market share further.

Three Facts about Women’s Golf

Although more and more women are beginning to participate in golf, it is still a predominantly male sport. In America, only 25 percent of golfers are women, causing women’s professional golf to be significantly less popular than men’s. Here are three facts about women’s golf:

  1. Queen Mary I of Scotland (1542-1567) is regarded as the first woman to play golf. Having learned the game in France, she was sent from a very young age and brought it back to Scotland later in life. The first golf course in Scotland, St. Andrews Links, was commissioned by her. She is also credited with coining the term ‘caddie’ from the French word ‘cadet’ she called her assistants. In golf, a caddie carries the player’s bag and gives support.
  2. Minigolf was initially designed for women. It is a smaller offshoot of golf that focuses on just the putting aspect of the game. Because it was considered inappropriate for women to swing the club past their shoulders, a miniature version of the game was designed by the Ladies’ Putting Club of St. Andrews in 1867. Today it is played by both women and men all over the world.
  3. The first woman to challenge a man in a professional tournament was the American golfer Babe Zaharias. Regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, she helped to found the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1958.

Minimizing Knee Injury Risks when Taking to the Ski Slopes

“Greens in Regulation” a Key Differentiator in LPGA Success

A 2022 Golf Digest article explores ways top athletes have found to consistently win on the PGA and LPGA Tours. For many years, Bobby Locke’s adage “Drive for show and putt for dough” was considered to be common wisdom, with athletes placing an emphasis on close-range games on the greens.

PGA Tour results over the past several years have diverged from this, with the long game now the major differentiator in men’s tournament achievement. As a result, an increasing number of golfers now place an emphasis on lengthening their range. More than half of PGA players attained average drives of 300-plus yards off the tee over the course of the season.

The LPGA doesn’t seem to support this new trend, however, with data revealing that “greens in regulation” (GIR) (and the related putts per GIR metric) is more significantly correlated with tour victory than either driving or putting. This reflects the importance of being able to consistently and accurately place the ball on the green.

Reflecting this, in all but two of the past 10 seasons, the year’s GIR percentage leader also earned one or more victories in that LPGA season. Players who have topped the GIR stat list in recent years include Ally Ewing, Sei Young Kim, Lexi Thompson, and Anna Nordqvist.
